How to Begin Counseling Services at True North Christian Counseling

As a prospective client, you may have questions about how to begin counseling and what to expect. We are glad that you are making this first step to seek counsel. Those of us at True North Christian Counseling desire to walk with you through any struggles you may have. Our goal is to help you meet the challenges of life in a way that will make a lasting difference. Here are the answers to some questions that you might be wondering about.

What is counseling?

Counseling is a time and space set aside for an individual or couple to receive professional help for emotional and behavioral issues through a spiritual lens. In counseling, you are encouraged to be honest about your situation, including your past and current life. An honest assessment and an accurate evaluation will give the best guidance to lasting solutions. You can be sure that our counselors are here to help you take that next step in the challenges you are facing. Your counselor at True North Christian Counseling adheres to biblical truths; it is your choice if and how a Christian perspective plays a role in your sessions.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is an important aspect of the counseling process, and we will carefully guard the intimate details of your privacy that you entrust to us. All counselors at True North Christian Counseling adhere to a strict code of ethics, including confidentiality. To provide a safe and open place for you to share your struggles, our counselors will not share your personal information, or anything discussed in a session without your permission. (Certain limitations on confidentiality do apply, as stated below. Ask your counselor for elaboration on these areas.) There are some situations when it would be necessary by law to share certain information with others: 1) If you would disclose that you have been harmed or that you may harm someone else. 2) If our records were to be subpoenaed. 3) If you would disclose that an elderly person, a minor, or a disabled individual has been or might be harmed.

What is the first step?

The first step is to complete the counseling forms (below). We need more specific information about your situation to assist us as we prepare to meet with you. Your time is valued and gathering this information will be beneficial to both counselor and client.

What is the first session going to be like?

Your first session is a time for your counselor to get to know you. You will be able to elaborate on the information you have already given and share more of your story. Your counselor will discuss your goals and set up an individualized plan for you. Your counselor will attempt to answer, clarifying any questions you may have.

What is a typical session like at True North Christian Counseling?

Counseling sessions typically last for about 75 minutes. During this time, you and your counselor will discuss the subject matter that brings you into counseling. Often, this involves looking at current behavior and thought patterns and exploring historical areas such as family and social relationships. Because human behavior is multifactorial, our counselors will examine the cognitive, behavioral, emotional, physiological factors, family of origin, environmental, circumstantial, past experiences, and spiritual background.

Clients will meet with their counselor weekly. The counseling process does involve some commitment, as it often lasts, at a minimum, about 6 to 8 weeks.

What do I do as a client?

By addressing these areas, you are beginning to take steps toward growth and healing. An important aspect of counseling is your level of participation. The counseling process may be challenging and bring up issues or feelings that you would rather avoid. However, as you face these challenges, with the help of your counselor, remember the goal is growth and healing.

We, here at True North Christian Counseling, are excited about the possibility of working with you. We offer this a warm and inviting experience for you; as such, if you have any questions about our services or counselors, don’t hesitate to ask. We would be glad to answer any questions you may have!
